Toggle Only mode on the GDO blaQ
Toggle Only mode causes the GDO blaQ to only send toggle commands to the opener to control the door.
The Toggle Only mode on the Konnected GDO blaQ is a setting that changes how the device sends commands to your garage door opener. It’s especially useful in cases where your opener does not have an infrared (IR) safety beam sensor installed or functioning — typically only found outside of the U.S. or Canada.
Normal Behavior (Open/Close Commands)
In normal circumstances, the GDO blaQ sends discrete open and close commands to control the garage door. This means:
-
If the door is closed and you tap “open,” the GDO sends an open command.
-
If the door is open and you tap “close,” the GDO sends a close command.
This mode is the most intuitive and safe because it respects the safety rules of your garage opener, including the IR safety beam sensor that prevents the door from closing if there’s an obstruction, and prevents the door from moving in an unintended direction.
What Is Toggle Only Mode?
When Toggle Only mode is enabled, the GDO blaQ acts like a wall button press (the physical push button on your wall). Instead of sending a discrete open or close signal, it simply toggles the state:
-
If the door is closed, one toggle command will start opening it.
-
If the door is open, one toggle command will attempt to close it.
-
If the door is moving, a toggle command may stop or reverse it (depending on your opener).
This mode does not consider the current state of the door and is therefore immune to the safety regulation that prevents closing without an IR beam.
When Would You Use Toggle Only Mode?
If the GDO blaQ works to open the garage but does not work when commanding the garage to close, and your garage does not have an IR safety beam installed, then you may need to use Toggle Only mode.
-
No IR safety beam installed: In some parts of the world, IR safety beams are not standard equipment. Without them, your opener may refuse to close in normal mode. Toggle Only mode provides a workaround, essentially tricking the garage opener that you've physically pressed the wall button instead of issued a remote close command.
-
Troubleshooting: If your GDO is unresponsive to close commands but opens fine, Toggle Only mode may resolve the issue.
🇺🇸 🇨🇦 U.S. and Canadian regulations (since the 1990s) require IR safety beams on all garage openers. Toggle Only mode is not useful in the U.S. and Canada because the garage opener will not work at all without a functional IR safety beam.
🇦🇺 🇳🇿 Australia & New Zealand standards require IR safety beams for garage doors equipped with for automatic/unattended operation with smart devices. The Toggle Only setting may be used to work-around this requirement but is not in compliance with safety standards.
How to Enable Toggle Only Mode
- Visit the Internal Web Page of the GDO blaQ. This can be found by tapping Open Web Page from the device info screen in the Konnected app, or by typing in the IP address of the GDO blaQ in the browser on a computer on your local network.
- Find the Toggle Only control and click or tap on the toggle to turn it ON
Install an IR safety beam (Obstruction Detection beam) instead
A safer and compliant alternative to using the Toggle Only mode is to buy and install an IR safety beam or obstruction detection beam for your garage opener model. These are relatively easy to install and provide protection as intended for automated garage openers.
