Matter Support (Experimental) for the GDO blaQ

Getting started with Matter on the GDO blaQ

Matter support is experimental! The Matter standard is still developing and in its infancy. Konnected's support for Matter is evolving rapidly and is not yet production-ready. We're releasing development versions of our Matter-enabled firmware for public beta testing and feedback. The GDO blaQ is NOT Matter certified and may not work on all Matter controllers.

What is Matter?

Matter is an emerging smart home standard that promises local control, simplicity, and interoperability between a variety of devices and smart home controllers. Big players like Apple, Google, Samsung, Amazon and others have committed to the Matter standard and are slowly implementing Matter capabilities into their controllers and apps.

What you can do with Matter

Matter on the GDO blaQ unlocks local control and streamlined onboarding with these popular smart home platforms:

  1. Apple Home (with an Apple Home Hub)
  2. Google Home (with a Nest Hub or Nest Audio)
  3. SmartThings (locally with a SmartThings Hub or SmartThings Station)
  4. Amazon Alexa (locally with a supported Echo or eero hub)

These are some of the most popular Matter hubs, but there are many more, and we haven't tested the GDO blaQ with all of them. Please chat with us if you've tried the Matter firmware on other platforms and let us know your experience!

Matter on the GDO blaQ

The Matter specifications don't yet support garage door openers as a device type, so we had to get a little creative to add Matter support for the GDO blaQ. Currently, the Matter specs include a Window Covering device type (blinds, shades, etc), which are similar to garage openers in that they have open and close commands and states. So, for now, the GDO blaQ will appear in your Matter controller app as blinds or shades! We expect this to be just temporary as support for more closure types is added in future versions of Matter.

The GDO blaQ also is able to interact with the garage opener light. This will show up as a separate light bulb device in your Matter controller.

Installing the Matter firmware

Ready to try Matter on your GDO blaQ? You will need a desktop or laptop computer running either Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser, and a micro-USB cable to connect your Alarm Panel Pro to your computer. Windows users, also see: Installing USB drivers on Windows

Go to install.konnected.io and follow the steps to install the Matter firmware.

If you change your mind later, you can always go back to install.konnected.io to re-install the stock firmware.

Commissioning into a Matter Controller

After flashing the firmware, power on the GDO blaQ and the blue status LED should blink slowly. Use the following QR code or manual code to add the GDO blaQ to your Matter controller:

Configuring

After the GDO blaQ is commissioned into a Matter controller, use the Konnected app to calibrate the optical sensor and optionally enable other options. The Konnected app uses BLE (Bluetooth) to configure the Matter-enabled GDO blaQ, so ensure that you're standing near the GDO blaQ when doing these steps.

You need to be accepted into Konnected's Matter EAP program, and your Konnected account enabled for Matter (beta) access. Apply to join the Konnected Matter EAP.

When your device is found, tap the device card.

The default pairing code is 1-2-3-4-5-6

A popup will ask you for a Bluetooth device pairing code. Enter the default code 1-2-3-4-5-6 to continue.

Once paired, tap Configure GDO Settings to set up the features of your GDO blaQ.

You can change the sound and duration of the pre-closing warning. The default and minimum warning duration is 5 seconds.

GDO Protocol

Set the GDO Protocol manually if necessary. Auto should work in most cases. Choose Security+2.0 for openers with a round yellow learn button. For Security+1.0 openers (purple or red) learn button, if you have a digital wall button (usually includes a motion sensor), then choose Security+1.0 with smart panel otherwise, choose Security+1.0.

Toggle-only Compatibility Mode

Enable this option if the GDO blaQ cannot close the garage door. This is normally only needed on certain models of garage openers in Australia or New Zealand that lack IR safety beam (obstruction) sensors.

Device Settings

Tap Device Settings to change the Bluetooth pairing PIN and set a password for Over-the-Air updates.
