Connecting to WiFi using a Web Browser (Captive Portal)

Use the built-in WiFi setup page to connect the Konnected device to WiFi.

Connect your device to WiFi with only a web browser (no app download needed) by following these simple steps.

This article applies to all Konnected devices running the ESPHome firmware platform with WiFi enabled.

The captive portal is enabled by default. When you first plug in your Konnected device, or when it cannot connect to its configured WiFi network, it broadcasts a WiFi setup network named konnected-xxxxxx (where xxxxxx is the last 6 characters of the device ID). The captive portal provides a web interface to configure WiFi.

By default, the setup network does not require a password. Before you put the device into regular use, you can disable the captive portal or protect it with a password under Settings > Network > Captive portal in the Konnected Mobile App. See Disable or Secure Captive Portal for the recommended settings and recovery tradeoffs.

  1. Power on the Konnected device and situate yourself within 10ft (3m) of the device.
  2. Connect your computer or mobile device to the konnected-xxxxxx WiFi setup network broadcast by the device.

  3. Once connected, open a web browser and navigate to http://192.168.4.1. This is the IP address of the Captive Portal WiFi setup page.
  4. Find your WiFi network and click it, or manually enter your WiFi SSID and password in the fields below.

  5. Click or tap Save to send the WiFi credentials to the device.
  6. If the connection is successful, the setup network will disappear and your computer or mobile device will disconnect and automatically re-connect to your home network.
  7. Proceed with discovering the Konnected device in the Konnected mobile app or your smart home platform.

Change the captive portal settings

Open your device in the Konnected Mobile App, then go to Settings > Network > Captive portal. You can disable the captive portal, add a password, change the setup network name, or select a WiFi channel. After changing these settings, continue through Save & Continue, Build Now, and Update Now to install the updated firmware on the device.

Review Disable or Secure Captive Portal before disabling this feature. If the WiFi credentials embedded in the firmware stop working, a device with no captive portal must be manually reflashed to reconnect it.
